“Until We are Free” is a story book and companion curriculum that links stories about different forms of human trafficking on the continent of Africa, within national borders (domestically), across regional borders (transnationally) and internationally, with proactive rights-based education that addresses root causes and advocacy. In these 11 stories, the reader finds youth protagonists just like them and their classmates.
A recurrent theme in “Until We Are Free” is the reality that some traditional practices are forms of trafficking; we see this in Akuba (Ghana) and Dike’s (South Africa) stories, where the practice of fostering leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and slavery-like conditions. Similarly, in Amunet’s (Egypt) story, the practice of misfar- or temporary marriages- constitutes trafficking.
While their stories are about their experiences with domestic servitude, sex trafficking, labor trafficking, child marriage, debt peonage and other forms of trafficking, they point us to possibilities of a just outcome. In the end, the question is: “what can I do to make my community more just?” In this respect, Free Generation International’s “Until We Are Free” is a part of a broader initiative to engage and equip African youth in their own communities as they address human trafficking and other human rights abuses.
